Camarena Elementary School Wins Engineering News Record K-12 Award of Merit 2014 Chula Vista Elementary School District’s Camarena Elementary School has been awarded ENR (Engineering News Record) Award of Merit for K-12 Construction.

The $28 million, 12 acres, 93,433-square-foot school features an administration building; a multipurpose building with library, food service and childcare; and two, two-story classroom buildings with 16 classrooms each. All 32 classrooms includes enhanced technology that displays curriculum, class/student work, instructional materials and Internet information. Breakout work areas are located between classrooms for teacher preparation. The school site features large covered walkways, lunch and shade structures, play areas with both hard courts and grass fields, bus drop-off area and staff and visitor parking.

The school is designed to use 27.9% less energy than allowed under the updated Title 24 code. Based on this energy-efficient design, the school will qualify to participate in the “Sustainable Communities Program” at San Diego Gas & Electric, which will pay the District a 20% incentive bonus, approximately $100,000.00. More important, the school’s energy saving features are expected to result in tremendous savings for the District on its utility bills.
