STORY
San Bernardino City Unified School District embarked on an educational vision of empowering it‘s students to prepare for future careers in advanced manufacturing. We had various visioning sessions with the District to establish their design vision for this innovative advanced manufacturing facility.
This pathway requires hands-on laboratory spaces with advanced manufacturing equipment. This includes 3-D printing, automated CNC mills, laser cutters, water jet cutter, manual lathes, and vertical mills. The pathway is supported from digital labs where projects and components are drawn and visualized prior to initiating the hands-on fabrication process.
Students are taught the theoretical and planning applications through direct instruction in the digital environment, and then transition into the manufacturing setting, and finally into the test and demonstration setting.
The facility design includes student collaboration areas for team projects and instruction, while in direct visual contact with the manufacturing area. Various support spaces are provided for general storage, material receiving, material storage, fabrication, cutting, and tool storage. When complete the facility will work as a cohesive unit where students are exposed to every aspect of the manufacturing process from conception to visualization, fabrication, and testing.
