This project presented the challenge of converting an existing auto shop building into a black box theater with the necessary support spaces to meet program needs. The site also sits on a FEMA registered flood plain so any new construction would require the building to be elevated 12” above the designated flood plain per DSA guidelines. In the end, we housed the scene shop, green rooms, and costume storage in the existing building and constructed a simple black box theater building, oriented slightly off plane from the existing building while taking advantage of the building elevation to create a simple yet dramatic statement for the campus and theater program.
